    Alleyway Encroachment Study in Dehradun

Alleyway encroachment refers to the unauthorized development of structures on public property or natural areas, such as encroachment by roads, iron grills, vegetation or gardens, and forward ramps. In Uttarakhand, Dehradun is rapidly developing, with numerous houses and buildings constructed each year. However, after construction work is completed, unauthorized encroachment often occurs around these structures, leading to traffic jams, obstruction of underground utilities, and other urban management issues.

To address this problem, the Uttarakhand Space Application Center is conducting a Pilot Alleyway Encroachment Study in some identified areas of Dehradun city. This project involves creating a geo-database of encroached areas using GIS-based surveys, which is then shared with the concerned department.

The final outcomes include the identification of encroached areas, measurement of total encroached area, and sharing of maps with relevant authorities. The initial focus is on the Dharampur and Mehuwala areas of Dehradun. Ground truth data collection was carried out in December through on-site surveys, GPS data collection, and photographic documentation to develop an accurate geo-database of encroachments.

    Objectives of the Study

    1. To identify encroached areas within the study zones.
    2. To collect GPS coordinates for mapping encroachments.
    3. To capture photographs for verification purposes.
    4. To gather additional supporting data for comprehensive analysis.
