Sacred Natural Sites (SNS) in Uttarakhand

Since the dawn of civilisation, different societies have implemented various strategies for natural resource protection, for the benefit of its citizens and society. Sacred Natural Sites (SNS) are strategies that hold profound spiritual value for individuals and communities in Uttarakhand.

SNS support various ecosystem services, including:

    • Maintenance and preservation of rich and diverse biological wealth
    • Maintaining ecosystem balance
    • Reduction of habitat destruction
    • Protection of native plants and animals
    • Preservation of traditional knowledge
    • Promotion of the availability of food, shelter, and water sources for living organisms in and around the grove

Historically, sacred groves have functioned as shared property resource systems linked to a culture-based approach to conservation. However, many of these sites are now in danger due to habitat deterioration, infrastructure development, land disputes, technological advancement, migration, fragmentation, and a general lack of respect for their intangible value. Therefore, it is highly imperative to assess the overall ecosystem services of major sacred groves (>10 Hectares in size) in the region and develop proper management plans for long-term sustainability.

    Study Objectives

    1. To quantify ecosystem services (provision and cultural) of major sacred natural sites (> 10 hectares) of Uttarakhand state.
    2. To conduct geo-spatial land use/land cover and vegetation assessment of major SNS in the state.
    3. To identify and promote ‘nature-culture circle’, through investigation and promotion for nature-culture linkages and experiences.
