    <h2About Project:

Under the framework of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and the guidelines of the Water Quality Monitoring and Information System (WQMIS) the operation and monitoring of 26 District and Sub-Divisional Level Water Quality Testing and Monitoring Laboratories in Uttarakhand are being carried out. This project is being implemented through the Project Management Unit (PMU) under a joint initiative of the Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST), Dehradun, and the Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan (UJS). All the 13 District Labs are Accreditated by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) while all 13 Sub-Divisional Labs have been recognized by NABL. Currently, 120 personnel are engaged in this project, including PMU staff at UCOST and chemists, lab assistants, and sampling assistants in all 26 laboratories.

    Objectives and Key Work:

    • To ensure safe drinking water, various physical, chemical, and bacteriological parameters are tested as per BIS 10500:2012 standards. This standard specifies the physical, chemical, and biological parameters that drinking water must meet in order to be considered safe.
    • Special attention is being given to rural areas of Uttarakhand. Water samples are being collected from across the state and analyzed in the NABL-accredited laboratories.
    • The key objective of the project is to monitor water quality based on major physicochemical and bacteriological parameters, including pH, TDS, Turbidity, Total Hardness, Alkalinity, Chloride, Nitrate, Sulphate, Fluoride, Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Total Coliform, coli, Colour, and Odour.
    • Conducting Water Quality Training Workshops for the working staff to update them about the latest advancement in IS 10500 (2012) and ISO/IEC 17025: (2017)
    • As part of this work over 38,000 water sources, more than 20,000 schools, over 20,000 Anganwadis centres, and approximately 15,294 villages have been covered under water quality testing, ensuring the delivery of safe drinking water to the people of Uttarakhand.

During the year 2024-25, more than 1,15,000 water samples have been tested across these 26 laboratories, marking a significant milestone in the state’s water quality monitoring and improvement efforts.
